Our Memphis retreat

We’ve just come back from our annual taste of science retreat.

And we’d love to thank our wonderful Memphis city coordinator Dr. Laura Hamel and her team for hosting us!

Every year we try and gather as many members of our taste of science city chapters to get to know one another and to discuss how to improve on our festival. This year we were lucky to be joined by science communicator Kyle Marian who lead us through some exercises so we could improve our own skills to disseminate information.

It’s not just about our teams though, and we like to take time to enjoy the cities we get to visit. On this occasion we played a little foosball, sampled a little authentic Memphis BBQ, crooned into the mic at the start studded Sun Studios.

One of the most profound visits we made though, was to the civil rights museum. An excellent and eye-opening series of exhibits leading up to modern day. A stark reminder that we are not all treated equally and that this inequality is reflected in science. Something that we, as an organization presenting science to our audiences should never forget.
