Her mission is to be:

Challenging academic norms by creating socially-aware, culturally-relevant educational entertainment and providing intersectional science communication and comedy training.

The Symposium: Academic StandUp is an educational stand-up comedy show and workshop series that aims to challenge what experts look and sound like while also exploring the process of knowledge building through sharp, socially-mindful humor. The workshop series provides intersectional, interdisciplinary, socially-mindful science communication and comedy training to academics. While the show brings together smart standup comedians alongside trained academics to do real stand-up comedy for adult audiences. The program, created, produced, and curated by science communicator and comedian Kyle Marian, began in 2017 in New York City's Caveat theater and has traveled to Detroit, Boston, and other cities in the US and works with partner academic institutions to bring the training program to minorities in STEMM (e.g.,Columbia Postdoc Society, Brookhaven National Labs, Science Gallery Detroit, Science in Vivo, NYU Postdoc Society, Cold Spring Harbor Labs, Queens Council on the Arts). Show themes are curated to spotlight the interdisciplinary discourse of a Symposium while maintaining irreverent fun and hilarious social critique of knowledge building through comedy. Previous show themes have included: Minorities Reframe History, Nasty Women of Academia, Blackademia Takeover, Museums are not Neutral, F*ck Sex and Gender Norms, Brain Awareness Week, Women in STEMM, Persons with Disabilities showcase, and more.

So welcome Kyle!
